Patents

Two U.S. patents for one index across storage providers.

Fastio co-founder Derek Labian invented a way to bring data held at several storage providers into one index, and to keep that index current as the data changes.

U.S. Patent No. 10,642,857 B2

Construction and use of a virtual index server

This patent covers building one index over data held at different storage providers. A user chooses a first storage provider, the data there to include, and where that data sits in a virtual index, then does the same for a second provider. The system builds one virtual index that refers to both. When another computer requests a location in the index, the system retrieves and serves the corresponding data.

The description shows four storage providers grafted into a single hierarchical tree: two merged at the root, one at /photos, and one at /docs that contributes only .docx files.

Automatic updates for a virtual index server

This patent covers keeping that index current. The system keeps a virtual index of data stored at another storage provider. Based only on determining that some of that data has changed, it automatically updates the index and automatically has a content delivery network (CDN) pre-cache the changed data.

The description covers two ways to learn of a change: a notice the storage provider sends (a webhook), or a check the system runs against the provider (polling). When pre-caching is configured, either approach can flush the cached copy and pre-cache the update.

How they fit together

One index, kept current

The first patent builds the index and the second keeps it up to date. Together they describe a system that brings data from several storage providers into one tree and keeps that tree matching the providers as files change.

  1. 01

    Build one index

Choose data at each storage provider and where it belongs, and the system builds one tree that refers to all of it. When another computer requests a location in the tree, the system retrieves and serves the corresponding data.

    U.S. Patent No. 10,642,857 B2
  2. 02

    Keep it current

Based only on determining that data at a provider has changed, the system updates the index automatically. The description covers learning of the change from a notice the provider sends or from a check against the provider.

    U.S. Patent No. 11,055,268 B2
  3. 03

    Pre-cache the change

Based only on that same determination, the system automatically has a content delivery network (CDN) pre-cache the changed data.
